Character Rules

Formal rules for character legality in the Open Saga League. These guidelines define exactly what makes a character valid for organized play, and are enforced by the automated verification tool.

Allowed Content

You can build your character using all official Wizards of the Coast D&D 5e content — core rulebooks, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, and other official supplements.

Third-party content is permitted, provided it remains balanced against the official 5e power level. Our AI will flag anything that appears overpowered and suggest adjustments.

Multiclassing Policy

Multiclassing is fully legal. You may combine any classes as long as your character meets the standard ability score prerequisites. The system does not penalize multiclassing, build redundancy, or thematic overlap between classes and subclasses.

Tier System

The league organizes play into five distinct tiers based on character level. You must register your character for sessions that match their current tier.

TierLevel RangeDescription
Tier 0Level 1Brand new adventurers
Tier 1Levels 2–4Novice heroes
Tier 2Levels 5–10Seasoned adventurers
Tier 3Levels 11–16Epic heroes
Tier 4Levels 17–20World-shapers

Ability Score Rules

We enforce a maximum limit on your total ability scores to ensure table balance.

Formula

Max Sum = 72 + (ASIs received × 2) + 4

ASIs received = floor(character level ÷ 4)

Example: A Level 8 character has received 2 ASIs. Maximum sum = 72 + 4 + 4 = 80.

  • Feats are entirely optional. A character with no feats is completely valid.
  • Minimum expected sum is ~68. Falling below this is a warning, not a fail.

HP Rules

HP is calculated using the max-die formula (not the average-die formula). This gives players the highest possible baseline.

Formula

Max HP = (hit die face × levels) + (CON modifier × levels)

If you have the Toughness feat, add: levels × 2

  • Auto-Fail: HP exceeding the maximum is an immediate hard fail.
  • ! Warning: HP below 70% of maximum triggers a warning (not a fail).

Magic Item Limits

Magic item limits apply per tier. Mundane equipment (torches, rope, rations, non-magical weapons/armor) does not count toward these limits. Items without a specified rarity are flagged as a warning.

Tier 4531

Subclass & Spellcasting Rules

  • Most classes choose their subclass at Level 3.
  • Clerics, Sorcerers, and Warlocks choose their subclass at Level 1.
  • Characters at Level 1–2 (non-Cleric/Sorcerer/Warlock) with no subclass are 100% valid.
  • Subclasses that grant spellcasting (e.g. Eldritch Knight, Arcane Trickster, Paladin Oaths) are treated as legitimate casters. Spells and slots are validated against the subclass's progression, not the base class.

Hard Disqualification Rules (Auto-Fail)

These failures cannot be appealed. Fix the issue on your sheet and resubmit.

Level Mismatch

Your character's actual level on the sheet does not fall within the tier range you selected during registration.

HP Over Maximum

Your character's hit points exceed the max-die formula result for their class, level, and CON modifier.

What the Verification Tool Checks

The system reviews your character in this exact order:

  1. 1

    Level Mismatch

Hard check comparing your sheet level to your selected tier range. Runs before the AI.

  2. 2

    Ability Score Sum

Computes your score sum and compares it against the tier-adjusted maximum.

  3. 3

    HP Validity

    Runs the max-die formula check.

  4. 4

    Magic Item Limits

Counts item rarity per tier limits.

  5. 5

    Knowledge Base Lookup

Fetches authoritative rules for your class, subclass, race, feats, cantrips, and known spells from the OSL Rule database.

  6. 6

    LLM Analysis

Validates content balance, subclass spellcasting, level-appropriate features, and any third-party content using AI — with a web search fallback for obscure content.
